Experience with the AHS garlic boluses

The AHS garlic boluses have been on the market since 2015. Tens of dairy farmers, mainly in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy, use the AHS garlic boluses regularly. You can find a few selected testimonials here.

Note: Supplementary feed - Accordingly, we make no promises regarding any effects. All experiences mentioned are from dairy farmers in practice. The individual descriptions contain only general information which cannot replace an individual diagnosis and advice from doctors.

We have been using the AHS-10 for three years at the onset of udder inflammation and also when the cow is somehow unwell. The AHS-28 is used when the cell count is high during trial milking. The success rate is 90%. We have been able to reduce the use of antibiotics with it.

Irmgard R., South Tyrol

We have been using the AHS garlic boluses for increased cell counts and for drying for three years and have had good experience with them. We have been able to reduce the use of antibiotics quite a bit. That is why we always buy the boluses from Knoblauchbolus.de.

Gerold R., Styria

For three years we have been using the AHS-10 for mastitis in acute form with "snotting" in the milk and also for inflammation in joints or e.g. the uterus. We give the AHS-28 in case of increased cell count after milk yield control or as a post-treatment after an AHS-10. The experiences are only positive! Inflammations are stopped and the cell count of diseased animals normalizes. Thanks to the AHS garlic boluses, we have been able to reduce the use of antibiotics quite intensively. Where we used to treat immediately with antibiotics, we now use the AHS garlic bolus. Exceptions are mastitis with watery milk changes, extreme inflammatory induration and dry heifers of susceptible cows. Here, antibiotics are still used in addition to the garlic bolus.

For about two years we have been giving the AHS-10 when there are flakes in the milk or when I notice that the udder quarter is getting hard. We give the AHS-28 to cows that have a chronically high cell count. The AHS garlic boluses are a super thing. We see much better healing, and the cows are not under as much stress as they would be with spraying and daily treatments. I once did the math: since we started using the boli, we've used 93 percent less antibiotics for inflammation. I like to order via WhatsApp. It's quick and easy, and you can do it on the side 👍

Melanie R., Schleswig-Holstein

Since October 2021, I have been using the AHS garlic boluses for acute signs of mastitis, such as flakes in the milk, (AHS-10) and for increased cell counts in the control report (AHS-28). Additionally in case of uterine problems, sometimes also in case of already serious symptoms of inflammation. Gladly also with diffuse illness symptoms, which make an antibiotic employment inevitable for support!
In many areas I feel the use as very positive and effective. In my opinion, the timely use is crucial. Often I can prevent the use of antibiotics or shorten the duration of the use.
I have definitely been able to reduce antibiotic use with the AHS garlic boluses.
Shorter use times or no need for antibiotics at all, where before I was more likely to need some. Also, fewer animal recurrences overall. Will continue to use the AHS garlic boluses. I am convinced that it has helped my animals and me.
Everyone should consider on a case-by-case basis whether exclusive use of garlic boluses is effective or whether the boluses should be used more as a support. It requires a certain amount of attention and animal observation from us as animal owners. One must be clear about this. Because only good animal control promises success with this alternative. And one must also give the animal the necessary time to recover. Initial deterioration with more flakes are unsettling, but are part of the healing process.

Konrad F., Bavaria

About three years ago we used the AHS garlic boluses for the first time. We give the AHS-10 immediately when there is increased conductivity. From my experience, if you bolus the cow at the first sign of increased conductivity, you have an 80-90% success rate. The high price of the bolus is a pity.

Georg T., North Rhine-Westphalia

We have been using the boluses for 4-5 years. Mostly the AHS-10. If we detect the mastitis early enough, we have a good success.

We have definitely reduced the use of antibiotics. We have recently invested in a health system for the cows with temperature monitoring. We hope that this will enable us to detect mastitis even earlier and thus achieve even better results with the boluses.

Andreas M., Bavaria

We have been using the garlic boluses for high cells for about three years. We have had good experience with it to reduce the cell count. We have been able to reduce our antibiotic use by using the AHS garlic boluses.

Jan Niklas P., Schleswig-Holstein

"Our employee was at a lecture at HöLa in Bredstedt in spring 2019, where an organic farmer presented his experiences with the Boli. We decided to test the boluses ourselves. The animals seem healthier directly after the administration, eat and drink more again.
Since March we have been giving all cows with flakes in their milk a 10 garlic bolus directly. There have been 40-50 of them. Since then we have not had to administer any antibiotics. This is also an advantage financially. With an antibiotic administration plus painkillers one lies fast with 150 €. A bolus costs less than €35, and the milk can continue to be delivered."

[Note from knoblauchbolus.de: Organic farms should clarify the use of garlic boluses with their association. In the vast majority of cases, the administration is approved].

Heidi E., Tyrol

"I am very pleased with the Boli! We put them in problem cows right after calving and also in animals just before the auction as a precautionary measure. To date, we have had no complaints and the cell count has decreased significantly. We gave the calf boluses in January and February as a preventive measure for calf flu and I must honestly say that we needed the vet for exactly one calf during this time! Since we are a farm with an average of 20 milking cows with rearing, the investment was certainly worth it.

Next order will then follow in the fall."

Update Septemer 2020: "This year we have gained the experience in the summer on the alpine pasture that the garlic boluses were very successful in pasture mastitis. 1 bolus and the animal is down again with the cell count after a few days."

Birte O., Schleswig-Holstein

"Antibiotic also kills the positive bacteria and causes blocking milk. So with flakes, we give a garlic bolus AHS-10 first. The success rate is not 100%, but often one bolus is enough. I always have a good feeling about this because I am doing something good for the organism."

Andrea L., North Rhine-Westphalia

"For acute mastitis, we use the 10 boli. If a cow has chronic mastitis she gets a 28. I have been evaluating MLP results as well as feeding curves for several months. So far, the success rate is very satisfactory."

Stefanie S., North Rhine-Westphalia

"We give the heifers a garlic bolus AHS-28 two weeks before calving and since then have had very few problems at calving in terms of udder inflammation, cleaning and fitness. An AHS-10 is given to animals with acute mastitis, metabolic disturbances and lack of vitality."

Markus B, North Rhine-Westphalia

"As soon as a cow gets mastitis, I give her an AHS-10. There's usually no sign of the mastitis the next day!"

Tobias L., Bavaria

If one of my cows gets a harder udder or there are flakes in the milk, she immediately gets a garlic bolus AHS-10. I do the same if she does not eat properly. In at least 70% of the cases everything is fine again. The cow no longer needs antibiotics. I use the bolus regularly.

Hans Hinrich B., Lower Saxony

"At our farm, since mid-2017, every cow gets an AHS-28 garlic bolus after calving. As a result, they are much fitter and come into milk better, which influences the entire lactation. The cost of the bolus is out so quickly. As a test, we occasionally omit the garlic bolus from particularly fit cows and are always proven wrong."

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences

In a study conducted at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (Large Animal Clinic, Veterinary Academy, Lithuanian University of Health Sciences), the administration of a garlic bolus AHS-28 was compared with the administration of antibiotic (Synulox LC). In addition, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug was administered in each case.
